If you want something to take pictures with, there are many good cameras out there that will do better than this. There is no mechanical zoom and the colors are somewhat off much of the time, but you can tweak them, I suppose, with some editing software later. That’s if you don’t mind the bother. If you want to just load your pics and print, you may be a little dissappointed.
This is promoted mainly to be used as a video camera, anyway, not so much as a still pic camera. That is mainly what you’d buy this for. There are much smaller and better MP3 players and voice recorders available, so don’t buy it for those, either. It is mainly for use as a video camera. And it fails at that! If you want to shoot some videos that look very amateurish, and they will without any editing, great. It will do that. You may then plug it into a T.V. and watch it, all of it, every single moment you recorded. If you want your videos to look more professional, and not like it was the first time you picked up a video camera, you’ll need to edit your work after you shoot it. You’ll need to use editing software, like Windows Movie Maker, which Insignia’s website even recommends. Unfortunately, this camera’s videos will not play on Movie Maker! And, I wasn’t even trying to play/edit High Definition videos! I have spent hours and hours just trying to play lower resolution clips, just in case any of the computors I’ve tried couldn’t handle HD. I tried it on my laptop, my netbook, and my roommates laptop. No luck. I could not get it to play properly with Nero, either, or two other editing software programs I downloaded off the net. I tried Movavi, like a previous reviewer mentioned, but they will not let you truly preview the program (you can download a trial version, but you CAN’T ACTUALLY DO ANY EDITING) without buying it first. Sorry, I’m not shelling out $$ unless I know it will work.
The videos will not even play (audio, but no video) with Windows programs. I can get it to play with Nero, but definately no editing. I have not tried to plug and play them on a TV, yet. I bought it to make fun, and creative videos, and then play them on a TV!
I have owned two other versions of these inexpensive, multi-function (video, stills, mp3 player, voice recorder) camcorders, and they were compatible with common editing software. So, don’t think that I’m a complete idiot. I’m not a computor geek, either, and should you have to be in order to make this product work??
Also, when I tried to open the user’s manual online (they don’t include a hardcopy), it wouldn’t open. I tried it on two computors and still no results.
Prospective Consumers, this is a toy. If you want to have something that will play some music, take some pics decent enough for the web, and shoot some very amateurish videos that may play on your T.V. but maybe not your computor, then this could be some fun for you. If you want quality and compatibility with common programs, so you can edit your work and be proud of it, buy something else.

the video is pretty good, unless you move the camera or your subject moves while filming. you have to be a good distance from the camera and speak up for your voice to sound right. camera isn’t great, but could be worse.
i must admit, i had pretty high expectations for this camera. i got it instead of the flip mino. big mistake, i think. i have had this one for a month and somehow the screen is already messed up. i haven’t dropped it, but i have been carrying it in my purse, so i guess that just means it is just extra sensitive.

After spending a little time working with my Insignia (it was a gift), I think that the issues the negative reviewers raise can be resolved.
It does good quality video and sound for a very cheap price. The still pictures are as good as most consumer point and shoot 5.1 mp cameras.
As far as HD or 720 dpi is concerned, it blows up okay on my 32 inch wide screen. Would I call it “high def”…of course not. Is it adequate? Absolutely.
The AVI video format clips can be converted with freeware to another format. So you just convert to a format for which you have a codec.
The one problem I’ve had is that there is no optical viewfinder, and the lcd does not stand up to sunlight. So shoot carefully. Also, when you use the digital zoom, you get artifacts. So don’t use it.
What you get is a camcorder, still camera, mp3 player, and voice recorder for $100.00. With your SD card, you have infinite capacity.
Best gift I can think of. I’m going to use this a lot on my vacation.

This camera works great. The picture is actually very clear, and though this is my first camcorder so I dont have a whole lot to compare to, it is working wonders for me. I have had no problem editing in windows programs, loading on my computer, or putting on youtube, so I’m not sure what everyone is having so much trouble for. Overall I am very satisfied….I paid a total of $103.86 with a 2 GB SD card. Very pleased!

I bought one of these expecting it to be at best mediocre, I was wrong.
This camera takes great video. I can edit the video with Nero 8, Pinnacle Studio 11.1 complains that I don’t have enough graphics memory. I am going to upgrade my video card and see what happens (wanted an excuse to do that anyway). But I have no problems viewing video on my Vizio HDTV.
I am running a sandisk ultra II 4GB card in it. I have tried various light conditions inside and outside and it does well in all of them. I am going to get hold of some cheap sdhc cards and try them.
I have pinnacle studio 11.1 and it really would not edit the Insignia video. I bought a little program called movavi video suite and it does a great job of editing. I also have ffdshow MPEG-4 codec pack installed on my machine.
